The English Premier League is the richest league in world football. Queens Park Rangers Football Club, established in 1882 in West London, were original members. But soon they were relegated and floundered in lower leagues. By 2007, failure on the field and a £18 million debt meant the club faced liquidation… from the brink of bankruptcy a deal was made. The club and its debt were bought outright by Formula 1 bosses Bernie Ecclestone, Flavio Briatore and Alejandro Agag, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and his son-in-law Amit Bhatia. When they arrived, the new bosses brought in the cameras. Though they financed much of the filming they did not control where cameras were pointed or what ended up in the film. This was the inside story of their battle to get QPR back into the Premier League by 2011.
Fast forward 8 years and you will find QPR back in the bottom half of the Championship, manager-less and financially crippled after they negotiated a fine with the EFL to the tune of £42 million. It’s time for a new four year plan.
New R’s boss Paul Parker will have his work cut out, the club are currently 8 points above the drop zone in 18th, one win will make them mathematically safe but it is still far from an ideal situation. The Premier League parachute payments are due to stop and with the end of the season approaching, there has been much speculation about QPR’s financial position and the futures of some of their players with a number of players out of contract this summer, most notably Jake Bidwell, Pawel Wszolek, Jordan Cousins and Joel Lynch. All have been told their futures will not be addressed until the end of the season.
So what is the new four year plan?
Amit Bhatia (Chairman), Lee Hoos (MD) & Les Ferdinand (DoF) came together with new manager, and fans favourite, Paul Parker to discuss the new direction of the club.
